La historia de la farmacia es una disciplina relativamente reciente: el primer libro que lleva este nombre supone un estudio global sobre la materia y analiza la evolución de la misma a lo largo del tiempo. Se editó a mediados del siglo XIX, coincidiendo con la época en la que la farmacología –la ciencia que prolongó el conocimiento de la farmacia hasta las propiedades, acciones y efectos de los medicamentos- iniciaba su etapa científica.
Esta obra se ha estructurado en cuatro grandes apartados teniendo en cuenta las diferentes actitudes históricas del hombre ante el tratamiento de las enfermedades y el empleo de medicamentos: la instintiva o intuitiva, la empírica, la mágico-religiosa y la científica, así como lo que han sido las tres grandes revoluciones en la historia del medicamento: la aparición de la terapéutica técnica en Grecia, la renovación farmacéutica, tanto en lo referido a la incorporación de nuevos remedios terapéuticos como al auge del comercio de medicamentos.
Las pretensiones de la obra no van más allá de lo que pueda suponer un mero bosquejo histórico. Se ha intentado dar una enriquecedora visión de conjunto, procurando dotar a cada capítulo del mayor rigor posible y amenidad.
